"Photography was getting stale. I was in a rut. The cameras themselves were becoming less and less interesting to me. The fun of the craft was gone – or at least was quickly slipping away. Then, I had the good fortune to discover Alison Shaw's workshop at Sun to Moon Gallery. And my life behind the lens changed. Alison’s class is worth the time and money and above all else it is worth pouring yourself into." – John C.

Fine photographs by Alison Shaw, at Sun to Moon Gallery, Dallas, TXWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

Looking to expand your photographic creativity? Learn from renowned photographer & gallery owner Alison Shaw of Martha's Vineyard (AlisonShaw.com) and Scot Miller (ScotMiller.com). Alison, who has taught workshops in Cape Cod, Maine, New Mexico, New Zealand, Tuscany & Venice, brings her unique teaching style to Dallas for three days of lectures, field photography sessions, critiques & more.

The emphasis during classroom time is on editing and critiquing your new work. Alison gives plenty of informal lectures, with topics relating to the day's shoots. Her primary focus is on color and light, and how they can magically transform the most mundane subject matter. She also covers such varied topics as learning to see in new ways, digital tips and tricks, exposure, color temperature, composition, and fine art. Her passion for color inspires her own photographs, which she will share throughout the workshop.

We will visit some great, varied photography locations over the three days that will challenge your creativity. Days will be long and intense, but also exhilarating and rewarding.

The workshop will help you sharpen your technical skills, expand your abilities to see, and make photographs in new and personal ways. We’ll explore color and light, and how they can magically transform the most mundane as well as the grandest subjects. Alison’s passion for color – its creative possibilities, and how to maximize its effect – is what inspires her own photographs, which she will share extensively throughout the workshop. She’ll also discuss exposure, digital tips and tricks, filters, color temperature and composition. Alison swears by Adobe Lightroom, and will share her Lightroom workflow during the workshop.

We’ll begin by sharing your personal photographic goals, and reviewing your past work. Each day, we’ll divide our time between the classroom and the field. We’ll take advantage of early morning and afternoon light to photograph, leaving mid-day for classroom time. During classroom time Alison will critique new work each day, lecture, and give individual feedback.

Field photography subjects will be varied. During the 3-day workshop, you will have the opportunity to make some wonderful new images - from nature and the Great Trinity Forest, to the urban landscape of downtown Dallas, to Dallas Heritage Village and more! Most of the time in the field will be spent together as a group, so that each participant can receive hands-on help from Alison and Scot with planning and making photographs on location.

You will make some wonderful new images, as you learn to see the world around you in a new, more intensely personal way.

Participants should be familiar with their camera’s operation in manual mode.

Participants are required to work digitally and need to bring a digital camera, a tripod, and a laptop for downloading and working with images. You’ll also need image-editing software, preferably Adobe Lightoom 6 or 5 (highly recommended– Alison uses Lightroom to manage her own workflow). About the Instructor

Sun to Moon Gallery Workshops instructor Alison ShawAlison Shaw has been a photographer all of her life, living on Martha’s Vineyard for most of that time. After graduating from Smith College in 1975, she went to the Island “just for the summer,” and never left. She got a job with the Vineyard Gazette, working her way up to Design Director. She also shot photographs for the paper and was the New England Press Association’s Photographer of the Year four times.

Alison began showing photos at art galleries in the early 80s. In 2000 Alison left the Gazette, and put all of her energy into Alison Shaw Photography, which is now a multi-layered enterprise. Her work has evolved from documentary to abstract, using her camera to literally paint with light. Another popular series of Alison’s work is the artist’s studios series – details of the studios and tools used by artists.

Over 8,000 of Alison’s fine art prints are in public and private collections. Her photographs have been in 19 books so far. She teaches photography workshops on the Vineyard every fall (since 1988). She teaches photography workshops in Venice, Maine, Nova Scotia, Santa Fe and on Martha's Vineyard for the Maine Media Workshops, Santa Fe Workshops, Rocky Mountain School of Photography, and the Alison Shaw Workshops.

The Alison Shaw Gallery, which Alison owns and runs with her partner Sue Dawson, is located in an old single-engine firehouse at 88 Dukes County Avenue in the heart of the Arts District in Oak Bluffs.
