Intimate Views: The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge

An exhibition of finely crafted photographic prints by Scot Miller

March 1 – April 28, 2012

Dallas-based photographer Scot Miller is well known for his work in other areas of our country, including Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada, Walden Pond, Cape Cod, the Maine Woods and the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park in Stonewall, TX. His most recent book, “My First Summer in the Sierra: 100th Anniversary Illustrated Edition” received the 2011 Classic Award from the National Outdoor Book Awards, the outdoor world’s largest and most prestigious book award program. Occasionally, as previously with the Great Trinity Forest and the Trinity River, he is inspired to set his sights on the “urban landscape” of his hometown. This is one of those times.

Miller is fond of calling the new Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge “the bridge in my back yard.” He and his wife, Marilyn, own Sun to Moon Gallery, located at 1515 Levee Street in the Dallas Design District. Levee, as in the Trinity River levee, which sits just feet behind the gallery. He has been watching progress on the bridge from the very beginning but it was in late summer 2011, after all of the cables had been strung, that the real genius behind Santiago Calatrava’s design became apparent to him. He had always been a believer in the bridge and what it would mean to the city, but was inspired by what he saw and felt challenged to interpret it on film and video. According to Miller, “from the outside looking in, the bridge oozes design elegance and structure. But from the inside, beneath the arches looking up and out, a sort of fascinating organized chaos takes over. Cables going every which way don’t make nearly as much visual sense as they do from afar. I was fascinated by the interaction of light with the many lines and angles.” Determined to look at the bridge from 360 degrees, his four-month creative journey took him to many interesting destinations throughout the city.

From late August, 2011 until the end of December, Miller photographed the bridge from all angles, at all times of the day, in all weather conditions, using medium-format and panorama film cameras. While the 50-pound camera backpack he carries into the wilderness is not out of the norm there, it does tend to stand out in the city. Blending was not an option. But he felt it important to have all his creative tools available when it came to camera and lens selection and he ended up using every piece of equipment in the backpack over the course of four months, including a 500mm lens that weighs in at almost ten pounds alone. While lenses this large are rarely used in medium format photography because of their size and weight, this particular lens ended up playing a big part in the creative process, enabling extremely detailed, intimate framings of the bridge. As he discovered over the course of the four months, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge takes on distinctly different looks depending on the light, the time of day, angle viewed from, etc. The resulting portfolio of thirty-two images reveals a fascinating study of this new bridge that is destined to make an architectural and design impact on the City of Dallas from day one.

Scot Miller is also a videographer & documentary maker and recorded the entire process in stunning HD video. He has created a short film combining music, time-lapse videos and still images that will be screened at Sun to Moon Gallery on March 2nd and 3rd to coincide with opening ceremonies for the bridge. He describes his concept for the video as “a ballet of music and light, emphasizing the lines and angles” of the new bridge and its impact on the skyline.

Sun to Moon Gallery invites the public to experience intimate, inspiring views of the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in both print and HD video.

Partial proceeds from print sales will benefit Groundwork Dallas (www.groundworkdallas.org), a non-profit doing great work in the Great Trinity Forest and its gateway communities.
