Alan Ross:
Forty Years in the West
An exhibition of hand-crafted black & white prints
January 10 – February 16, 2013
Sun to Moon Gallery is proud to celebrate forty years of master photographer Alan Ross’s working in the western landscape.
Alan has earned an international reputation as a specialist in the art of black-and-white photography – as an artist, educator and master printer. He was Ansel Adams’ Photographic Assistant in Carmel from 1974 to 1979, and was integrally involved with Adams’ books, teaching in Yosemite, and production of fine prints. He knows Adams’ approach and technique perhaps better than any other photographer today.
As an artist, Alan is best known for his tonally exquisite black-and-white photographs of the American West; his photographs hang in collections and galleries around the world. Alan’s work in the last thirty years has been mostly with an 8x10 view camera. As a photographic educator, he specializes in helping photographers at any level, and using all formats and styles, realize and express their photographic vision. He has led workshops in locations from Yosemite to China. Alan will be teaching a One-Day Photography Workshop on Friday, January 11 at Sun to Moon Gallery.
Alan lives in visually captivating Santa Fe, where he pursues his own work, teaches one-on-one workshops in the art of seeing and master printing, and writes articles and blogs sharing his vast knowledge of the art and craft of photography.
He also continues to be the exclusive printer of Ansel Adams’ Yosemite Special Edition negatives, an assignment Adams personally selected him for in 1975. Alan makes each print by hand from Adams’ original negatives using traditional darkroom techniques.
This will be Alan’s second North Texas exhibition to feature his exquisite gelatin-silver photographic prints created the old-fashioned way, in the darkroom. "Alan Ross: Forty Years in the West" will include many of Alan's classic images, plus, of special interest to collectors, several #1 prints will be introduced for the first time anywhere.
